Inquiry - Bees

In Inquiry we were in groups and we did presentation on bees. This is my groups imovie.

Character Portrait

In writing we have done a character portrait on someone in our family that's older than us. I chose my older brother Max. We needed to do four paragraphs on them, the first paragraph had to be on their physical appearance, the second paragraph was their behaviour traits, the third paragraph was on their reputation and the fourth was on their environmental belongings. Each paragraph we had about one writing lesson to practise them so we knew what we were doing. This is mine.

As he strolls down the street his short dirty blonde hair sits messily on his head while his canterbury track pants scrape together each step he takes. His casual, oversized black T-shirt hangs down to his knees, swaying side to side. When people walk past they are instantly envious of his light ocean eyes and his strong smelling lynx body spray. White shining converses glow in the daylight. His head pops out of any crowd, being the tallest in his family. He has a smooth, round face with bushy eyebrows and a sly smile.

Owning a deep voice, people often feel small and weak around him. When he walks , his footsteps thump heavily on the ground which is strange being he has a slim, skinny body. His laugh is a loud, cheerful chuckle. When dinner time comes, he turns out to be very greedy, eating more than double of what most people of his age do. He is also very charismatic and is good at getting people’s attention when he wants to talk. Being courageous, he likes to do things no one else wants to try, but occasionally pulling people into it.

He is clearly known for being a bright and friendly person who is always helping people out if they are struggling. A plastered smile on his face even on the toughest days. When night time comes, he's not the person to make a quite dinner and watch a movie, no, he's more likely to be out partying with his friends in a club or go out to dinner with his family. He is a very outgoing person. Always in a happy mood and has never lost his temper at anyone or anything, but just goes with the flow. He is great at starting conversations and always has something interesting going on in his life, leaving you hooked in on one of his stories from last week.

Carrying around in his pocket will be the latest IPhone he spent his last paycheck on. He usually lives in flats with his mates unless he has done his monthly move to a newer, flasher house. If you try to look for him you will find it very difficult because he could be anywhere due to his adventurous spirit. In his clothes drawer will be dozens of track pants and denim jeans. He owns a black toyota he has had for only a short time from only just getting his licence.

Quick Write

In Room 9 we do Quick writes where Miss Fisher writes a starting sentences on the board and we choose which one we want to start with and write a quick write on it. Here is my one I wrote:

Hiding under my bed, i'm petrified. I think they are still downstairs. I was just watching tv in my room when I heard a smash downstairs and a heavy footsteps. I quickly jumped off my bed and turned off the TV, I dived under my bed, daring not to breathe. I heard them open a drawer, the slow creak of the hinges. I'm crying now i'm going to die. I'm just hoping the drawer they opened was the glass one, just wanting a drink.

They are coming up the stairs now. Well probably running, his footsteps are going as fast as my heartbeats. They are in my room now. Under my bed I can see their shoes as they walk around my room looking for valuables, Then the worst thing happened. Ahh ahhh ahh CHOOOO. I'm dead. I see them stop and make their way over to my bed. I see a face peeking under the duvet, a man's face. He has a long white beard and mustache covering most of his face, his eyes are a shade of dark green and his head is completely bald. He grabs my legs pulls me out of my hiding place, I grip the carpet trying to pull myself forward so I can grab onto the bed legs. But i'm not strong enough, he has a firm grip on my ankles which I can't shake off.

As I am pulled from under my beloved bed I see something which makes my heart drop. A gun. He is holding a gun. To my head. He starts shouting something at me but i'm not listing all I can think about is my family and everything i'm going to miss here on earth. I wait for the bang but nothing comes. Maybe he's not going to shoot me, maybe he's just trying to scare me. I keep an eye on his finger on the trigger which is moving closer ever so slowly and he still continues to shout at me. Closer and closer it goes till I swear it should be pushing it down by now. He stops yelling at me and says some words which I can just catch “ Hey what does this weird trigger thing do?” I see the lights.

Rap By Ruby S and Lola

In room 9 Lola and I made a rap about change makers for homework, this is it:

READY FOR CHANGE

Recently I’ve got a feeling that something ain’t right
I’ve been living my life and just holding on tight
I’ve been struggling through the days to reach the long winter nights
And the time has come to make a change

It feels like everything in life is a race
With everyone expecting to come in first place
But I’m stopping running now to do an about face
I’m making a stand to make a change

Cause I’m not designed like some machine
That goes no matter what when the light turns green
If you think about this, you’ll know what I mean
It’s time to pull over and make a change

The thing that stops us changing is irrational fear
That people won’t like us when these changes appear
But good friends when we change will always be near
So don’t be afraid make a change

When you think things need to happen make a move
Get your life bouncing to a different groove
We are the change makers the boys and girls in our youth
The world is ours to make a change.

Diving Report

In Inquiry we did a report on the olympics, I did mine on diving. :)

Rendered Image

What is diving you ask?
Well, diving is a sport which they use in the olympics where a competitor jumps from a diving board, a high platform above the water, and try to do the most impressive dive before they hit the water. Divers usually train for about 20-30 hours per week morning and afternoon sessions so they can be fit enough and decide what diving routine they would do. Sometimes divers can dive in pairs in a synchronised act.

What are some tips for diving?
-Don’t skip breakfast! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it gets you started, and it should give you energy to last until lunch.
-Stay hydrated 24/7! If you get dehydrated, you won’t be able to do diving, because when you get dehydrated, you can get weak and maybe feel a bit dizzy, you could also get sick with a bug.
-Don’t diet! If you diet, you won’t get enough energy, and you will be too tired to train, and if you don’t train, you can’t dive.
-Recover right! If you don’t recover properly, you will probably make a mistake and get disqualified because of an injury or just a cold that you had recently.

How would a diver get disqualified?
Some ways a diver could get disqualified are:
  • False start - at the start of a race divers must be positioned on the starting block, if a diver moves before the starting signal they will get disqualified.
  • Delays - You will get disqualified if you are not on the starting block at the start on the heat.

When did diving become an Olympic sport?
Diving was included in the olympics for the first time at the 1904 games in St Louis. At first diving was all aimed for the longest dive into the pool, now it's about the fanciest or how amazing the dive looks before reaching the water.

Diving became popular in Sweden and Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries. Diving was mostly practiced by gymnastes who started performing tumbling routines into the water.

Letter to past Selves

In writing we imagined what we would be like when we are 30 years old and wrote a letter to how old we are now.
Here is my letter:

Ruby Savidge
Havelock North
Hawke's Bay
                                                                                                                                   1st August 2016

Dear Ruby,

My life is great. I have got a full time job as a lawyer working with my old school friend, Ruby Wilkinson-Smith. I own a deep red ferrari and have a little fluffy white chihuahua named Bailey who I call Bails for short and a little 10cm ginger kitten called Zoe. I also own a huge penthouse all to myself ( as you can see i'm basically rich. ) Unfortunately I have an annoying neighbor called Chloe who has 10 dogs and 15 chickens. I live in New Zealand having my family only an hour drive from my house.

Now when I was your age, actually maybe a bit older I wanted to live in a penthouse and drive a deep red ferrari but everyone I told that to said that it would probably never happen but I set my mind to do it because I really wanted it and guess what? I got exactly what I wanted, that's what happens if you set your mind to something, so don't worry everything will turn out great for you.

I'm a very lucky person, just the other day I was walking along and found a $100 note just lying on the ground, right in front of me, so tempting to just pick up and stuff in my pocket. But as i'm a good person I took it to the police station and they gave it to a woman who was crying over by the corner.
‘ Oh thank you ever so much, you have just made my day!’ She spluttered as a police officer handed her the money saying I found it lying on the road. ‘ How honest of you dear, how about for your honesty I will give you $500 and you can go buy yourself a new phone or whatever these young people like these days’
‘ Oh well thank you very much’ I say in return. I didn't know really what to say. I wanted the money but I already had a lot of it so I let her keep it and made my way back to my house. That is how lucky I am, well you are as well, since you are me.

Yesterday as always I had to go to work as a lawyer at 5am in the morning, so I got ready and drove to work. As I was driving I saw my work friend Ms Wilkinson-smith on the side on the road with her bright orange jeep. ‘ Hey Ruby having trouble with your car?’ I say. ‘ Yeah, think I can have a ride in yours to work?’ ‘ Sure, hope in’ I replied. So me and Ruby drove to work talking about how her car broke down. Turns out she crashed into a tree and spun out of control into another tree! Luckily she didn't get hurt! After work me and Ruby went to the car shop to buy another car for Ruby since her old one was a wreck. As we walked in the shop owner didn't looked one bit surprised. ‘ Not again Ruby, control your temper on the road!’
‘ Sorry’ Yelped Ruby As Ruby wondered around the car shop she saw a purple convertible ferrari and fell in love with it instantly. ‘ I NEED that car’
‘But that is the same car I own but purple’ I start to say.
‘Pleease Ruby we can be twinsies ‘
‘Fine’
‘YAY’ Ruby screamed. So me and Ruby both drove to our homes after that. So that's all I really have to tell you now apart from to always believe in yourself and don't care about what others think!

 BYE :) Ruby

First Aid Electronics

How to get ready for a disaster:

From the Get ready website I learned four things that we need to do to get ready for a disaster

1. Learn about disasters and how to keep safe

2. Create and practice a household emergency plan

3. Assemble and maintain emergency survival plan

4. Have a getaway kit incase you have to leave in a hurry

The emergency survival items tell me I need a torch with spare batteries and I am going to design and make some kind of light for an emergency

Smoking

Intro:
Would you like to develop bad breath, wrinkled skin,
rotten teeth, heart disease, cancer and even die young?
Well then smoking is for you. Good afternoon Miss Fisher
and class. Today i'm here to tell you some of the things
smoking does to your body and to try to persuade you
never to do it. Firstly I'm going to tell you some statistics
surrounding smoking, secondly,  I will tell you about what
happens to your body when you smoke and finally say some
of the diseases and illnesses you can get from smoking.

Did you know that every cigarette you smoke reduces your
lifespan by 11 minutes and is a huge waste of money, I mean
like the average smoker spends $160 a week which is nearly
$8500 a year just on cigarettes! Another interesting fact is
people who smoke are 20 times more likely to develop lung
cancer than non smokers. Smoking, it is a harmful thing, it
makes the risk of a heart attack 200% to 400% greater than
non smokers. Smoking is currently responsible for the death
of one in ten adults worldwide and if current smoking patterns
continue, it will cause 10 million deaths each year by 2020.

Now I will talk about what smoking does to your body. Your lungs
can be very badly affected by smoking, Coughs, colds, wheezing
and asthma are just the start. Smoking changes your brain and
makes you addicted to cigarettes.
Smoking can reduce your your hearing and your vision, cause
gum disease and gives you wrinkles. Smoking also raises
blood pressure and puts stress on your heart; it makes your
blood thick and sticky and more likely to clot; it also increases
cholesterol in the blood and narrows the blood vessels. Smoking
also makes it very difficult to exercise, imagine that, starting
school being the best at sport, leaving school being the worst
all because you started smoking.

On this last paragraph I will be telling you some of the
diseases you can get from smoking. Some diseases
you can get are heart diseases including heart attacks,
strokes, poor vision, lung cancer, blood cancer, diabetes
and a whole range of other cancers are more likely if you
smoke.

In order to lead a healthy life, you should not smoke.
The best thing to do is to never start because once you start,
you're addicted and it is very hard to quite. So if your mates tell
you try a cigarette, be the smart one, say no.

ANZAC Art

My ANZAC Art

This is my Anzac Art.

A Soldier's Honour

A Soldier's Honour

I look about at everyone else, clothes ripped and bloody wounds all over their body.
I feel cold tears rolling down my cut up face, sizzling as the tears roll into my cuts burning me alive.

Hup 2,3,4, I stumble along with the others away from the blood curdling screams, away from the horror.
I see ahead of me our trench that we built with our own two hands, our safety.

Another soldier falls behind me, dead by a bomb that just exploded, blowing us all forward into some mines.
The mines start exploding before our very eyes, until it's only me and a dozen.
But still we stumble along, every step taking more blood from us.
It took our boots from us a little while ago, what more does it want from us.

Clouds start surrounding soldiers,’ GAS ‘ I shout, ‘GAS’ eventually soldiers start waking from warlike trances.

As the gas starts to cover us thick blanket surround us we all quickly slam on our gas masks
One man suddenly starts heaving in breaths of gas as he had dropped his gas mask into the gooey mud below him.
He starts staggering around crying with fear as he falls to the ground.

The gas was like a greenish cloud surrounding us, coveringing us, hunting for our lungs.
As it thickened I could hear it screaming for life but I ignore the urge and keep walking through the blinding fog.

I see a shadow rush towards me, I feel a hand on my shoulder. I hear big gulps of air as my friend,my mate,my bud, chokes and slowly falls to the ground heaving, dying.

If you were here this year, this day, this minute, you would see my agony, my pain,my grief of the soldier I see before me. There is no colour on him his brown suit, his pale face like a ghost haunting you everywhere you go. His once blue eyes are now white pebbles in a solid black circle. His hanging head is nearly touching the muddy ground which disgusted me and making my spine shiver with horror.

Now imagine, just imagine what it would be like to stagger along behind a dying soldier, a suffering soldier and you can't do anything about it. Imagine him coughing and sputtering up blood and mucus every little bump in the gravel.
Imagine his trembling hands as he attempts to reach out and take my hand.

Blood, death, guilt, do you really want to suffer tremendously or even die just for a place that you're not even going to be there to see.
Who knows what it's going to look like, we could have come here and loss to this battle leaving us all dead, deaf or blind and even maybe all your limbs have been amputated.
You come back being permanently scarred or may not even come back at all.
So I ask you all, is it really worth dieing for your country?

W.A.L.T: Understand how what you say online affects others.

In class we watched a video about someone called Patty who was cyber bullied so we had to create a Tagul about how Patty felt.
